Alexander Ovechkin
Alexander Ovechkin, a
Moscow born hockey
player, was the number one draft pick in the 2004
NHL Entry Draft. In his first NHL season (2004-05),
Ovechkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie
of the Year. The following NHL season (2006-07), Alexander
scored a league leading 65 goals (to earn the
Rocket Richard Trophy) and racked up a league
leading 112 points (earning him the Art Ross
Trophy). That same season he was also honored
with the Lester B. Pearson Award (top player
judged by members of the NHL Players' Association)
and the prestigious Hart Memorial Trophy (league's MVP).
Proving he was in a class of his own, it came as little
surprise when the Washington Capitals signed their star to a
lucrative contract extension the following year
(2008). With a price-tag of $124 million over 13
years, it is the highest contract (to date) in NHL
history.
