Alla Pugacheva
is a Russian singer and actress who has attained an
iconic status both in Soviet times and in the
post-Soviet era. From the start of her
recording career in the mid 1960s to the time she
announced her retirement from singing in 2009, no
other Russian singer has sold more records or
garnered more attention from both fans and the
media.
In recognition for her amazing contributions to Russian music and entertainment, Pugachova was honored with the title People's Artist of the USSR (1991). On her 60th birthday in 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also presented her with the 3rd Degree Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
