Almaty Travel Guide
Almaty (Алматы) is a city located in south-eastern Kazakhstan near the border with Krygyzstan (see map). With slightly more than 1.3 million inhabitants, it is the nation's largest city and former capital. Almaty is a cosmopolitan city with a multiethnic community of Kazaks (51%), Russians (37%), as well as several minorities of both eastern and western ethnicity. With its modern infrastructure and stunning mountain setting it is also a popular home to a surprisingly large number of foreign expats.
Situated at the foot of the stunning Zailijskiy Alatau Mountains , the city is a wonderful staging area for outdoor enthusiasts. Outdoor activities are almost limitless. The most popular include hiking, mountain biking, climbing, horseback riding, fishing, white water canoeing and rafting, and downhill skiing. Several agencies within the city offer professional guided tours, but with proper planning many of these activities can be done independently.
