Arkhangelsk Travel Guide
The city of Arkhangelsk (Архангельск) is located in the north-west region of European Russia (see map). Founded on the Northern Dvina River in close proximately to the White Sea , it serves as an important Russian sea port which is kept open year round with the use of icebreakers. The major export from the city and surrounding region include raw timber, pulp and paper, resin, cellulose, and prefabricated building materials.
Despite its largely industrial nature, Arkhangelsk also holds a wealth of history for the travelers to this northern region. With a present day population of 355,200 inhabitants, it was originally settled by Norseman and officially founded in 1584 as the city of Novo-Kholmogory. Renamed in 1613 after the monastery of the Archangel Michael, Arkhangelsk served as Russia's principal sea port until the founding of Saint Petersburg in 1703. It also served as an important port for the White Army and their Allies during the civil war against the Bolsheviks and an important port for Allied armaments and material in the fight against the Germans during World War II.
