Chelyabinsk Travel Guide
Chelyabinsk (Челябинск) is located just east of the Ural mountains in the southern foothills next to the Miass River (see map). It is the capital of the Chelyabinsk region and has roughly 1,100,000 inhabitants.
Starting with its first steel plant in 1930, it grew into a large industrial town a decade later when factories were moved east away from advancing German armies. While it is a major metallurgical center producing steel, zinc, metal alloys and agricultural machinery, it may be most recognized for its production of T-34 tanks and Katyusha rocket launchers during the war. As a result of this production it earned the nickname "Tankograd" (Tank City).
Chelyabinsk lies on the Trans-Siberian railway and is one of several on route alternatives for a stopover. It also makes for an interesting one or two day excursion if you are visiting Ekaterinburg. The city has quite a lot to offer visitors including theaters, an art gallery, a philharmonic hall, an organ hall, a circus and several museums.
