Cherkasy Travel Guide
Cherkasy (Uk. Черкаси, Rus.Черкассы) is a city situated in central Ukraine on the bank of the Dnieper River in the area of the Kremenchuk Reservoir (see map). With a population in excess of 300,000 inhabitants, it is an industrial center comprised of food processing, synthetic-fiber, and fertilizer industries.
Founded in the late 13th century, it initially served as a fortified city for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the 17th century it was an important center of Cossack resistance against Polish-Lithuanian influence and in the late 18th century it became part of the Russian Empire.
Today Cherkassy maintains a tranquil atmosphere quite different from that of larger industrial cities found throughout Eastern Europe. Influenced by its ties to agriculture, visitors are treated to "small town" hospitality. Residents still have time to stop and assist visitors who look lost or unsure of their surroundings. Single men will also be pleased to learn that Cherkasy is often referred to as the "town of brides", with a favorable ratio of 6 girls for every single man.
