Chisinau Travel Guide
Chisinau (Rom. Chişinău) or Kishinev (Ru. Кишинев) is Moldova's capital and largest city (see map). It has a population of 601,000 inhabitants (2004), but with an area of 120 km2 (46 sq miles), you don't have to worry about fighting large crowds. The city itself is located on seven hills and stretches along the Bik River.
Despite suffering heavy damage in World War II, the city still retains its old European splendor. Sometimes called the White City due to the many buildings built of white limestone, its also considered one of the greenest cities in Europe. White-stone buildings buried in green foliage creates a splendid atmosphere for leisurely summer strolls through the city's historic streets.
Those interested in the city's modern conveniences won't be disappointed. Despite the city's relatively small population it has much of the variety found in larger European cities. There are decent hotels, a wide variety of restaurants and cafes, modern cinemas and bowling alleys, plus an extensive array of futuristic super-clubs and discos that challenge the finest nightclubs of Western Europe and America.
