Dnepropetrovsk Travel Guide

Dnepropetrovsk (Ru. Днепропетровск) or Dnipropetrovsk
(Uk. Дніпропетровськ) is a city located in east-central Ukraine on the bank of the Dnieper River (see map). With a population of roughly 1.1 million inhabitants, it is a large iron and steel town and still maintains a machine building and aerospace industry which are remnants of its role as an arms producer during the days of the Soviet Union.

Founded in 1776 near the site of an older fortress, the new town was originally named Ekaterinoslav, in honor of Empress Catherine the Great. Most of the original city, with its compact city streets and 19th century architecture, no longer exists. Many historic buildings and churches were destroyed in the Second World War and in Stalin's communist times in the 1930s. Fortunately a few remnants are still scattered throughout Dnepropetrovsk, allowing visitors a glimpse of the past.

Today's city, despite sometimes unattractive Soviet architecture, is nevertheless quite beautiful. Spacious parks and long, wide boulevards stretch through the central part of the city while picturesque walkways take you down the embankment to the slow-moving Dnieper river. From any number of hills (there are 7 in the city) you can also find beautiful vistas of the river, islands, and parks in the distance.
