Ekaterinburg Travel Guide

The city of Ekaterinburg (Екатеринбург) is located in the eastern foothills of the central Urals next to the Iset River (see map). Only 40km (25miles) west of the Europe-Asia obelisk, this city of roughly 1.5 million inhabitants is virtually on the crossroads of two continents.

A western terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway, Ekaterinburg has played a leading role in industry, politics and culture of not only in the Urals, but in all of Russia. Its Iron mills and metallurgical plants were the boon to early Russian industry. It was the city where Russian Imperialism came to an end when Russia's last czar, Nicolas II, was executed along with his family on July 16, 1918. Boris Yelstin, Russia's first president, was also born in the village of Butka which is located on the outskirts of Ekaterinburg.

The present day Ekaterinburg is rich in architectural monuments, museums and theatres. Eco-tourists and hunters have great opportunities to explore the surrounding forests and mountains. Students and researchers will also find numerous institutions of higher learning with specialties ranging from forestry and mining, to law and medicine.
