Kaliningrad Travel Guide
Kaliningrad (Калининград) is a picturesque city located on the
south-eastern coast of the Baltic sea at the mouth of the Pregel river (see map).
Founded in 1255 as Königsberg, the city was the capital of German East Prussia until the end of World War II. Transferred to the USSR in 1945, it
was named Кaliningrad in 1946.
With a population of roughly 450,000 inhabitants, the city possesses a unique blend of square Soviet housing mixed with old German and Prussian estates. Its a vivid reminder of the radical changes the city has seen throughout its history and of its ongoing transformation.
