Kharkov Travel Guide

Kharkov (Ru. Харьков) or Kharkiv (Uk. Харків) is a city situated in north-east Ukraine at the confluence of the Kharkiv, Lopan, and Udy rivers (see map). With a population of roughly 1.4 million inhabitants, it is Ukraine's second largest city and one of the nation's main industrial, cultural and educational centers.

During the early years of the Soviet Union Kharkov was the capital of Soviet Ukraine before being superseded by Kiev in 1934. During World War II Kharkiv was the site of 3 major military engagements leaving 70 percent of the city in ruins and tens of thousands of inhabitants dead.

Rebuilt after the war, Kharkiv now maintains more than three centuries of architectural design. Visitors will enjoy narrow streets with historical buildings. In the city center there is an impressive main square, majestic cathedrals and churches, and a metro in which individual stations are themselves considered works of art. Amongst other attractions, Kharkiv boasts more than 100 parks within city limits, numerous professional theatres, a circus and an interesting choice of museums which enlighten visitors about the cities rich cultural and historical past.
