Kiev Travel Guide

Kiev (Ru. Киев) or Kyiv (Uk. Київ), Ukraine's capital, is located in the north-central part of the country on the banks of the Dnieper River (see map). With a population of 2,691,000 inhabitants (2005), it is Ukraine's largest city and the nation's most important center of industry, culture, history and politics.

One of the oldest cities in northern Europe, Kyiv was a commercial center by the 5th century and became the capital of Kiev-Rus in the 9th century. It remained one of Europe's most powerful cities right up until the 13th century. During this time it gained the distinction of "the Mother of all Rus", the birthplace of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian nationalities.

Kiev has since regained its distinction as one of Europe's greatest capitals. The sheer beauty of the city is sure to mesmerize even the most veteran of travelers. Chestnut lined streets, numerous parks and public gardens provide a storybook like backdrop for Kiev's famous gold domed churches and cathedrals. Galleries, museums and historical monuments, tell of the city's proud and often tragic past. Only after seeing these sites does one begin to understand and appreciate the true resilience of this city and its citizens.
