Kiev (Ru. Киев) or Kyiv (Uk. Київ), Ukraine's capital, is located in the north-central part of the country on the banks of the Dnieper River (see map). With a population of 2,691,000 inhabitants (2005), it is Ukraine's largest city and the nation's most important center of industry, culture, history and politics.
Kiev has long held the distinction as one of Europe's most beautiful capitals. The sheer splendor of the city is sure to mesmerize even the most veteran of travelers. Chestnut lined streets, numerous parks and public gardens provide a storybook like backdrop for Kiev's famous gold domed churches and cathedrals. Galleries, museums and historical monuments, tell of the city's proud and often tragic past.
