Kirov Travel Guide
Kirov (Киров) is a city located in north-eastern European Russia on the Vyatka River (see map). With a population of roughly 500,000 inhabitants, it is an industrial city producing machinery and metal-works, chemicals, wood products, and armaments.
Founded in 1174 by Novgorod colonists, it became the capital of an independent principality before being conquered by Ivan III in 1489. From its very beginning, the city benefited as a transportation hub. Its location on a major tributary of the Volga facilitated trade as far south as the Caspian Sea. Later in the 17th century it also grew in importance due to its position on the Siberian road from Moscow.
With such a long and colorful past, Kirov offers visitors numerous points of interest. Cultural and historical monuments, museums and theaters can be found throughout the city, including the Assumption Cathedral (1689) and an opera and ballet theatre.
