Krasnodar Travel Guide
Krasnodar (Краснодар) is a located in south-eastern European Russia on the Kuban River (see map). The city was founded in 1794 by the Chernomorsky (Black Sea) Cossacks and named Ekaterinodar (Catherine's gift) in honor of Catherine the Great. From that point on it was used a military post to deal with the often turbulent Caucasus frontier to the south. After the Russian Revolution the city received its current name. Depending on the era, it can either be translated as "Reds' gift" or "beautiful gift".
Кrasnodar has roughly 765,000 inhabitants. Thanks to the fertile black soil and mild climate, agriculture in the region supports a fairly large food processing industry. Another leading industry, the oil refining industry, is fed by a pipeline originating from the vast Caspian oilfields.
Visitors to the city, particularly those who come in the summer, will be pleasantly surprised with the abundance of attractions, numerous parks and open spaces. Krasnodar is a rather pleasant city to take a leisurely stroll or relax in an outdoor cafe. Theatres, galleries and museums also provide a way to discover it's history and cultural heritage.
