Krasnoyarsk Travel Guide
The city of Krasnoyarsk (Красноярск) is in south-central Russia on the Upper Yenisei River (see map). Founded as a Cossack fortress in 1628, it was transformed into a major metropolitan city after the Trans-Siberian Railway linked it with the rest of Russia in the late 19th century.
Under the Soviets, one of the world's largest hydro-electric damns was constructed and the city developed into an important industrial town producing heavy machinery, aluminum, base metals, as well as pulp and paper. Today there are close to 950,000 inhabitants.
Historically Krasnoyarsk was a destination for political exiles of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Most notoriously, it was the center for one of Stalin's Gulag camps from 1938-1960. Despite seeing much of its growth during communism, there are nonetheless remnants of pre-soviet history and architecture. In recent years, many such relics have been restored back to their former grandeur.
