Mariupol Travel Guide
Mariupol (Ru. Мариуполь, Uk. Маріуполь) is a city situated in southeast Ukraine on the coast of the Azov Sea at the mouth of Kalmius River (see map). Barely 100km (62 miles) from the Russian border, its population of roughly 500,000 inhabitants is predominately Russian.
Mariupol was known from the beginning of the 16th century as a Cossack fortress named Kalmius. It gained status as a town when Greek settlers from Crimea arrived in 1778. At their request, the town was named Mariupol. Like other major cities in the region, it experienced large scale industrial growth in the latter half of the 19th century. The city benefited not only as an important iron and steel producer, it also benefited from its location as a transportation hub for rail and shipping. As a result, it has maintained a fairly diversified economy with a sea port, shipyard and fish cannery in addition to its iron and steel industry.
Another industry only known by Russian and Ukrainian citizens is Мariupol's tourism industry. Thanks to the regions favorable weather and pleasant retreats, the city attracts individuals who come for rest and relaxation along the sea. Trips to local health resorts are a great way to cleanse and rehabilitate an ailing body.
