Nizhny Novgorod Travel Guide

Nizhny Novgorod (Нижний Новгород) is a located at the very center of European Russia at the confluence of the Volga and Oka Rivers
(see map). Since its founding in 1221, the city has always maintained a political, economic and cultural prominence within Russia.

Thanks to its geographical location in the center European Russia, the city prospered commercially establishing itself as the trade capital of the Russian Empire. As a cosmopolitan city of wealth, it also became an important education and cultural center, reaching its peak in the 18th century when it was considered one of the most prosperous trade centers in all of Europe. With the advent of the Soviet Union it still grew as an industrial center although being closed to foreigners for the protection of Soviet Military research.

In recent years a sense of renaissance has been returning to the city. The city is slowly regaining its reputation as a commercial leader on the international stage. Foreign investment has been growing, reversing an earlier period of decline. Construction, restoration and renovation have helped the city recapture some of its past grandeur.
