Odessa History and Sightseeing
Founded as a Russian naval fortress in 1794, Odessa flourished as a commercial port and major grain exporting center throughout most of the 19th century. This prosperity also facilitated its growth as a major center of culture and intellect. Opulent homes, businesses and theatres were constructed in styles ranging from Renaissance to Art Nouveau. Libraries and Universities were opened attracting a multitude of scholars and artists who's names are recognized to this day.
The 20th century was a period of continued growth and industrialization, but it was also a time of transition and suffering. During this time the city experienced revolution, the great famine (1921-1922), a brutal war and German occupation (1941-1944), plus the subsequent eradication of the city's 250,000 Jews. This would have been enough to dampen the spirit and resolve of any city. Odessa, nevertheless, picked itself up and rebuilt. More than that, it managed to retain much of its historical architecture, cosmopolitan zeal, and good natured spirit which earned it the reputation as the Soviet capital of humor.
