Opera and Ballet Theater Odessa Opera Theater got its start in 1810, while the current National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet, with its Italian Baroque facade, opened for its first performance in 1887. |

Duc de Richelieu Statue Standing at the top of the Potemkin Stairs is a statue of Armand-Emmanuel du Plessis (Duc de Richelieu), influential French Nobleman and Odessa's first governor within the Russian Empire. Under his administration Odessa greatly increased in importance and became the empire's third largest city. |

Potemkin Stairs Perhaps the city's most well known landmark, the Potemkin Stairs are considered the formal entrance to Odessa from the direction of the Black Sea. The top step is 12.5m (41 ft) wide, while the lowest step is 21.7m (70.8 ft) wide, giving the illusion of greater length. |

Musical Comedy Theater The theater of musical comedy, which got its start in Lviv in 1947, is now based in the theater named in honor of great operetta actor Mikhail Vodianoy. Built in 1981, with seating for 1300 people, the theater is one of the most modern, technically equipped theaters in Odessa. |
