Omsk Travel Guide
Omsk (Омск) is a located in south-central Russia at the confluence of the Irtysh and Om rivers (see map). With a population of roughly 1,140,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest industrial and cultural centers in Siberia.
Omsk played a predominant administrative and cultural role in western Siberia right up until the days of the Soviet Union. During the 18th century it was the seat of the Governor General of Western Siberia, and later of the Governor General of the Steppes. This period led to the construction of several churches and cathedrals, mosques, a synagogue, the governor-general's mansion and a military academy.
With the advent of the Trans-Siberian Railway, Оmsk became a popular commercial center which saw the the development of new homes, stores and theatres as well as modern transportation and communications. Foreign powers, including the British, Dutch and Germans, opened consulates to represent their commercial interests. Omsk was even proclaimed as the Capital of Russia for a brief period during the Civil War in 1918-19 when it held the imperial gold reserves.
Although Omsk lost its much of it cultural and administrative importance under Soviet rule, it has managed to preserve its history. Thanks to this history Omsk is now one of Siberia's most popular tourist destinations. Whether you are a fan of history and culture, enjoy trekking in Siberia's immense wilderness, or simply need a stopover to take a break on your Trans-Siberian Railway journey, there is no doubt that you will find a wealth of things to see and do.
