Perm Travel Guide
Perm (Пермь) is a city of west-central Russia on the Kama River in the foothills of the Ural Mountains (see map). A city of roughly 1.2 million inhabitants, it is a major administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center.
The city, founded in 1568 as the village of Lagoshikha, started to rapidly develop as an industrial center with the founding of a copper-smelting plant in 1723. Soon after it became a center for Russia’s military manufacturing. During Soviet times, because of its military industry, it was a closed city to foreigners and Russians alike.
Today Perm is a less known and less frequented destination that still offers a number of interesting tourist attractions. Whether you are an ecotourist, a fan of history and culture, or simply a weary traveler seeking a resting point on a long Trans-Siberian journey, Рerm undoubtedly has something of interest for you.
