Petrozavodsk Travel Guide
Petrozavodsk (Петрозаводск) is situated on the western shore of Lake Onega in north-west European Russia (see map). With a population of roughly 280,000 inhabitants, it is the administrative, industrial and cultural center of Karelia.
The city originated around an ironworks starting in 1703. With the start of the Northern War against Sweden, Peter the Great ordered the development of iron foundations and armament workshops in order to supply his military with cannons, cannonballs and assorted weaponry. By the end of the 18th century a sizable settlement had grown around the ironworks and was subsequently named Petrozavodsk or "Peter's Factory-town".
Today hundreds of thousands of tourists come to Petrozavodsk in order to explore Karelia's natural, cultural and historical attractions.
