Saint Petersburg Travel Guide
Saint Petersburg (Санкт Петербург) is situated in north-west Russia where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland (see map). With 4,178,000 inhabitants (2005), it is Russia's second largest city, the 4th largest city in Europe, and the most northerly city in the world with a population over one million inhabitants. Often called Russia's "Northern Capital", its a major European cultural center and Russia's most important Baltic Sea port.
Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, Saint Petersburg was intended to be Russia's "window to the west". It turned out to be everything the czar hoped for and more. The result is one of the world's most captivating cities. Splendid palaces, colorful churches, historical monuments, tree-lined avenues, enchanting cannels, distinguished theatre and world renowned galleries will overwhelm even the most seasoned travelers.
