Stavropol Travel
Stavropol (Ставрополь) is a city situated in south-west Russia on the northern slope of the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas (see map). Founded in 1777 as a Russian fortress and base for the subsequent Russian conquest of the Caucasus, it has a current population of roughly 375,000 inhabitants.
Much of the local economy, including wool, leather, grain milling, and food-processing industries, relies on the rich agricultural region of the surrounding Stavropol Plateau. Another important part of the local economy is the area's natural gas fields which are piped up to Moscow.
One of the city's most notable residents was undoubtedly Mikhail Gorbachev. He was born in the region and spent several years working in the city as the head of the region's administration.
Stavropol is an episcopal see (office of the chief bishop) of the Russian Orthodox Church, and one of the best-built provincial towns in the Russian Empire. Streets are wide and orderly laid out while many homes are surrounded by large yards and gardens. Numerous public libraries, a peoples palace, a vibrant city center and the general spaciousness of the city, make it a pleasure to visit.
