Tver (Тверь) is a city situated in west-central Russia between Russia's two largest cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg (see map). Founded in the 12th century, it's favorable location on the Volga allowed it to develop into an important trade center and powerful principality that rivaled the likes of Moscow.
In 1485 the city lost some of its stature when forces of Ivan the Great seized the city and brought in under the reign of Moscow. The city regained some prominence at the turn of the 18th century with the foundation of St. Petersburg as Russia's new capital. The city became a principal station on the highway (and later railway) between the old and new capitals. Under Catherine the Great the downtown was thoroughly reconstructed with imposing Neoclassical structures including the Travel Palace of the Empress, Ascension Church and Noble Society House.
Today, with a population of roughly 450,000 inhabitants, Tver is a large industrial center with textile, chemical, machine building, printing and publishing enterprises. Cultural life is also diverse with theaters, the Philharmonic society, museums, cinemas, a circus, plus numerous architectural monuments.
With its rich history and relative proximately to both Moscow and St. Petersburg, Tver is also seeing the birth of a tourist industry. Only a few hours by car or train, it is a great way to escape the crowds and see life in a smaller Russian city.
