Ufa Travel Guide
Ufa (Уфа) is a city located approximately 96 km (60 miles) west of the Ural Mountains (see map). Encompassed on three sides by the Belaya, Ufa and Dyoma rivers, the city forms a peninsula of sorts, stretching 45 km (28 miles) from southwest to northeast and occupying over 750 sq km (290 sq miles).
With a population of roughly 1.1 million inhabitants, Ufa is the capital of a multinational republic known as Bashkortostan. Representing over a hundred nationalities and ethnic groups, the bulk of the population is composed of Russians (55.5%), Bashkirians (10.7%) and Tatars (27.9%). Despite its rather multinational population the city has maintained a half millennium of peace, ever since Russian Streltsi (privileged military corps) laid the foundation of a fortress in 1574.
A major industrial center, Ufа owes its growth to two events. First was the redeployment of industry to the city at the outset of World War II. Second was the development of of vast oilfields in the region. Today Ufa produces electrical and mining equipment, has 3 large oil refineries and a major petrochemical industry.
