Vinnitsa Travel Guide
Vinnitsa or Vinnytsia (Uk. Вінниця, Ru. Винница) is a city situated in central Ukraine on the banks of the Southern Bug River (see map). With a population of roughly 360,000 inhabitants, the city is most recognized as a center of agriculture and education, as well as the home to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Founded in the 14th century as a Lithuanian outpost, Vinnitsa joined the Russian Empire in 1793. With its mild climate, fertile soils, and favorable location on the crossroads of economic, social, and geopolitical boundaries, the city prospered during the 19th century. Impressive estates, churches and theatres were constructed, many of which have survived to this day. Vinnitsa's growth also nurtured it's development as a center of culture and education. Vinnytsia was home to several renowned intellectuals including poet Nikolai Nekrasov, aviation pioneer Alexander Mozhaisky (designer of the first Russian aircraft), and surgeon Nikolai Pirogov (founder of the plaster cast and pioneer of field surgery and use of ether as an anesthetic).
The foundation for learning has carried over in to this day. Vinnitsa currently boasts a variety of institutions of higher education including Vinnytsia Technical University, Pedagogical University, Trade Economic University, Agricultural University, and the Vinnytsia National Pirogov Memorial Medical University. With such a broad range of institutions it is often referred to as Students’ City of Ukraine.
