Volzhsky (Волжский) is a city located in the Volgograd Oblast on the bank of the Volga River (see map). Predominantly an industrial city, it has 16 large metallurgical, chemical and other industrial enterprises which support a population of roughly 350,000 inhabitants.
The first settlers to the area arrived in the 18th century. They were fugitives who called themselves "Bizrodniye" ("without kin") and the village they started went by the same name. Approximately the same time Peter the Great, noting the abundance of mulberry forests in the area, ordered the development of a silk factory. The settlement of Volzhskiy, nevertheless, wasn't registered as an official settlement until 1952. With a mere population of 10,000 inhabitants, the city's population and industrial might soon started to expand with the construction of a hydroelectric station.
Volzhsky may be best known for its neighbor, Volgograd, which lies only 20km (12 miles) to the south-west. With less than half the population of its larger neighbor, Volzhsky is understandably a more tranquil and relaxed city. Visitors can enjoy popular restaurants, cafes, theatres, and nightclubs as well as leisurely summer days recreating on the banks of the Volga.
