Yalta Travel Guide

Yalta (Ялта) is a Crimean resort town located on the Black Sea 80 km (50 miles) south of Simferopol (see map). With a population of 80,000 permanent residents (2005), its population swells several times this size between May and October when tens of thousands of vacationers come to enjoy the regions warm climate, fresh sea air, scenic mountains and breathtaking coastline.

Home to an ancient colony know as to the Greeks as Tauri (9th century BC - 3rd century AD), Yalta is better known as the summer retreat of the Russian Imperial family and the site of the Yalta Conference (February 1945), when allied leaders Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt met to discuss their plans for post war Europe.

Situated in a stunning setting directly between the Crimean Mountains to the north and the Black Sea to the south, it is easy to understand why it was favored by Russian nobility as a place to build their villas. Yalta undoubtedly is one of the most picturesque resorts in the world. Protected from northerly winds by the Crimean Mountains, the region maintains a subtropical climate similar to regions of the Mediterranean much further south. These are ideal conditions for orchards and vineyards, producing bountiful summer harvests and world renowned wines such as those produced in Masandra and Alupka.
